“Three on a Match” (1932) follows the intertwined lives of three childhood schoolmates: Vivian Revere (played by Joan Blondell), Mary Keaton, and Ruth Westcott. Having graduated together in 1919, they reunite a decade later. Vivian, seemingly successful, descends into debauchery and substance abuse, questioning her marriage to wealthy lawyer Robert Kirkwood. Meanwhile, Mary, who once faced reform school, turns her life around. A superstitious misstep leads Vivian astray from her steadfast husband, while Mary becomes a loving stepmother to Vivian’s son, Robert Jr. The film’s title draws from an old wives’ tale about three sharing a single match, foreshadowing their collective destinies.
