John Leech (1817-1864) was a British caricaturist and illustrator, renowned for his contributions to Punch, a humorous magazine that blended verbal and graphic satire with light social comedy. His critical yet humorous cartoons on the Crimean War influenced public attitudes toward heroism, warfare, and Britain’s global role. Leech’s fame extends to being the first illustrator of Charles Dickens’ 1843 novella “A Christmas Carol”. Additionally, he pioneered comics, creating the recurring character Mr. Briggs and sequential illustrated gags.
