The Frolie Grasshopper Circus was a promotional booklet created by the American Cereal Co. (Chicago) around 1898. This whimsical booklet featured illustrations in chromolithograph and chromotypograph. It showcased grasshoppers and clowns performing circus tricks and served as an advertisement for Quaker Oats breakfast cereal. Each page has rhyming verse and is beautifully and colorfully illustrated with a depiction of a clown(s) and a grasshopper(s) performing feats of strength, balancing acts, trapeze flying, and other circus skills. They typically depict the clown(s) or grasshopper(s) handling a box of Quaker Oats. The illustrations for “The Frolie Grasshopper Circus” were created by William Chesebrough Ostrander.
