Adelaide Herrmann (1853-1932), an English magician and vaudeville performer, earned the moniker “the Queen of Magic.” Born Adelaide Scarcez in London, she initially studied aerial acrobatics and dance. Her path intersected with that of magician Alexander Herrmann, whom she married in 1875. Together, they dazzled audiences across the United States, Mexico, South America, and Europe. Adelaide was an integral part of their act, performing as a levitating sleeper, a human cannonball, and a spectral dancer swirled in red silk. When Alexander passed away in 1896, Adelaide courageously continued the show, becoming extremely well-known in her own right. She toured internationally, headlining vaudeville acts and even making her Broadway debut. Adelaide Herrmann’s legacy endures as one of the few magicians to perform the daring “bullet catch” trick, and she remains an inspiring figure who defied gender norms in the world of magic.
