Sir William Jardine, the 7th Baronet of Applegarth, was a distinguished Scottish naturalist born on February 23, 1800, in Edinburgh, Scotland. His passion for the natural world led him to explore various fields, including ornithology, ichthyology, botany, and geology. Jardine’s early education included studying medicine at the University of Edinburgh, but his interests expanded far beyond the medical realm. He co-founded the Berwickshire Naturalists’ Club and contributed to the establishment of the Ray Society. His legacy lies in his extensive editing work on “The Naturalist’s Library,” a monumental series of forty volumes covering ornithology, mammals, insects, and fish. Jardine made natural history accessible to Victorian society by collaborating with his brother-in-law, the printer and engraver William Home Lizars, to produce this popular collection. His private natural history museum and library were renowned as some of the finest in Britain. Jardine’s dedication to sharing knowledge and celebrating the wonders of the natural world continues to inspire generations of naturalists and enthusiasts.
