“Arch of Titus, Rome” is a remarkable painting by the renowned Italian artist Giovanni Antonio Canal, commonly known as Canaletto. Born in Venice in 1697, Canaletto was celebrated for his vivid topographical paintings that captured the beauty of Venice, Rome, and London. This painting, signed and dated 1742, is one of a unique group of five large upright views of Rome, depicting the major sights of the ancient city. It portrays the Arch of Titus, the oldest of the great Roman triumphal arches, erected in AD 81 to commemorate the capture of Jerusalem by Emperor Titus. The painting is admired by a group of three gentlemen ‘Grand Tourists’, with their abate or cicerone (guide). The work is of high competence, yet not entirely typical of Canaletto. It is generally supposed that this painting is based upon drawings made by Canaletto’s nephew, Bernardo Bellotto. Despite this discrepancy, “Arch of Titus, Rome” stands as a testament to Canaletto’s masterful expression of atmosphere in his detailed views.
