Black Leaf 40 was a highly toxic pesticide containing a mixture of lead arsenate and other chemicals, commonly used in the early to mid-20th century to combat pests such as caterpillars and beetles on fruit trees, particularly apple trees. While initially hailed as a revolutionary solution to pest control, Black Leaf 40 proved to be extremely hazardous to human health and the environment.
Exposure to its toxic components, particularly lead and arsenic, led to numerous cases of poisoning among agricultural workers and residents in areas where it was applied. Long-term exposure to Black Leaf 40 has been linked to various health issues, including neurological damage, cancer, and developmental disorders.
