The Turin-Milan Hours, also known as the Milan-Turin Hours, is a partially destroyed illuminated manuscript that defies strict categorization as a mere book of hours. Its exceptional quality and intricate history make it a captivating artifact. Commissioned around 1380 or 1390, it involved a multitude of artists, assistants, and patrons over nearly sixty years. The manuscript’s conception remains shrouded in mystery, with the original commissioner’s identity lost to time. French artists contributed to its early leaves, which exude ornate beauty within the International Gothic tradition. However, the pages compiled from the mid-1410s reveal remarkable skill in portraying perspective, especially those attributed to the enigmatic artist known as “Hand G”. Whether Jan van Eyck, Hubert van Eyck, or a closely associated talent, Hand G’s miniatures continue to intrigue art historians. Although the Turin portion was tragically destroyed in a fire in 1904, photographs preserve glimpses of its splendor.
