“Christ Blessing, Surrounded by a Donor and His Family” is a triptych painted by an anonymous German artist around 1573-82. The central panel depicts Christ blessing a family of seven gathered closely around Him. The group engages in a dialogue on salvation and the afterlife through biblical verses inscribed overhead. The four eldest family members align with tablets on the walls, bearing invocatory verses from the Book of Psalms. The church spires reflected on the orb in Christ’s hand associate them with the North German city of Hamburg. This family portrait adapts the conventions of the triptych altarpiece to the new demands of Protestant devotion, emphasizing Christ’s direct accessibility to believers. This image from “Triptych of a Protestant Family” is from the central panel, left side.
