Bartolomé Esteban Murillo (1617-1682) was a Spanish Baroque painter known for his religious works as well as captivating portraits of everyday life. His extensive oeuvre includes luminous depictions of saints, angels, and beggars. Murillo’s early paintings were influenced by Zurbarán’s chiaroscuro style, featuring illuminated countenances against dramatic backgrounds. Notably, he produced a cycle of paintings for the cloister of the convent of San Francisco in Seville (1645) and a celebrated series for the church of the Caridad (1667-70). His subjects ranged from contemplative scenes, like Saint Francis Comforted by an Angel, to lively portrayals of flower girls and street urchins.
