Poster advertising Cosmydor soap. The rich colors are meant to reflect what the soap will do to one’s complexion and skin. Known as the father of the modern poster, Jules Cheret (1836-1932) was a French painter and lithographer. He worked on everything from theater to advertising. Here advertising Cosmydor soap, Cheret has drawn on one of his compositional standbys: an attractive and fashionably dressed young woman shown using the featured product. The artist’s use of cross hatched lines to create tonal shading in the woman’s face, wrists and decollete is clearly visible.
