William Hamilton Gibson (1850-1896) was an American illustrator, author, and naturalist. Born in Sandy Hook, Connecticut, he hailed from a distinguished New England family. Gibson’s early interest in botany and entomology led him to become a skilled illustrator and wood-engraver. His drawings graced popular periodicals such as Harper’s Weekly, Scribner’s Monthly, and Century. His meticulously detailed black-and-white illustrations often focused on nature, capturing flora, fauna, and landscapes. Gibson authored several books, including Pastoral Days: Memories of a New England Year, Highways and Byways, and Our Edible Mushrooms and Toadstools. His work combined scientific accuracy with a poetic touch, making it accessible to a wide audience. Sadly, he succumbed to overwork and apoplexy in Washington, Connecticut, where a relief portrait of him adorns a boulder.
