Dog in Top Hat Smoking a Cigar by Will Rannells – Art Print
This image (actually titled “After Six”) of a white pit bull dog in white bow tie and top hat was the Life Magazine cover on the issue dated March 29, 1917 (#1796).
An Ohio native, Will Rannells was born in 1892 in Caldwell, and died in 1982 at his home in Westerville. Primarily known for his paintings of dogs, Rannells was a champion and a protector of the species. He served for 35 years as Professor of Commercial Art at Ohio State University, retiring in 1961. In 1916 he began painting dogs, rather than girls. It is reported that he thought they were much better subjects than the beautiful girls he had previously been drawing. These portraits were soon published on the covers of such magazines as Judge, Life (where his dog in top hat cover appeared), and McCall’s. He also illustrated Eldon Roark’s 1947 book “Just a Mutt.” Other children’s books with his illustrations are “Waif, the Story of Spe,” “Animals Baby Knows,” and “Animal Picture Story Book.” His annual dog calendar was produced for over 40 years.
