“Festival in San Rocco” is a captivating painting by the renowned Italian artist Giovanni Antonio Canal, better known as Canaletto. Born in Venice in 1697, Canaletto was celebrated for his vivid topographical paintings that captured the beauty of Venice, Rome, and London. This painting, created around 1735, depicts the Feast Day of Saint Roch in Venice. The composition is dominated by the Scuola di San Rocco adorned with garlands and paintings. The painting shows the Doge in his golden robe, the Cancelliere Grande in a scarlet robe, the three secretaries of the Savio Grande in mauve robes, and other dignitaries coming out of the Church of San Rocco. Canaletto’s meticulous attention to detail, particularly in his depiction of light and shadow, brings the scene to life, offering viewers a glimpse into the everyday life of the festival.
