Fleishhacker Pool, once the largest swimming pool in the United States, held a prominent place in San Francisco’s recreational history. Located next to the San Francisco Zoo, this colossal pool spanned 1,000 feet in length and 150 feet in width at its midsection. With a depth ranging from 5 to 14 feet, it could accommodate an impressive 6 million gallons of saltwater. Opened in 1925, it attracted movie stars like Johnny Weismuller, Esther Williams, and Ann Curtis during the 1920s and 1930s. Lifeguards even used wooden rowboats to navigate its vast expanse. Unfortunately, due to deterioration and outdated operational systems, Fleishhacker Pool closed in 1971.
