Gamages, a department store in Holborn, London, holds a storied legacy. Established in 1878, it quickly became a London institution. Founded by Albert Walter Gamage, it began as a rented watch repair shop but soon expanded to take up most of the block on 118-126 Holborn, near Holborn Circus. Gamages stood out for its unique location away from the main shopping hub of Oxford Street. The store boasted an array of departments, far more than modern counterparts. Its extensive toy section delighted children, and the annual Gamages catalog was a cherished gift during autumn, just in time for Christmas wish lists. A highlight was the large model railway, alternating between day and night scenes with clever lighting. Gamages also excelled in hardware, photography, camping, pets, and sporting goods. In 1928, the store expanded, signing a lease for 489-497 Oxford Street under the architectural guidance of Sir Edwin Lutyens. However, despite its grand opening in 1930, the venture failed as a business and closed within eight months. The building was auctioned off, marking the end of an era.
