John William Waterhouse (1849-1917) was an English painter who left an indelible mark on the art world by embracing the legacy of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. Born in Rome and raised in London, Waterhouse initially studied sculpture but later devoted himself entirely to painting. His early works reflected an Academic style influenced by artists like Lawrence Alma-Tadema and Frederic Leighton. However, as he matured artistically, Waterhouse became closely associated with the Pre-Raphaelite movement. He drew inspiration from classical and romantic literature, creating captivating scenes from Greek mythology and the Arthurian cycle. One of his most famous paintings, “The Lady of Shalott” (1888), based on Alfred Tennyson’s poem, portrays the tragic tale of Elaine of Astolat. Waterhouse’s mastery extended to female figures, evident in works like “Circe Offering the Cup to Ulysses” (1891) and “Pandora” (1896). His naturalistic depiction of landscapes, influenced by en plein air painting, enhanced the potency of his art. Waterhouse’s legacy endures through his evocative portrayals of myth, romance, and feminine beauty.
