His early works reflected an Academic style influenced by artists like Lawrence Alma-Tadema and Frederic Leighton. He drew inspiration from classical and romantic literature, creating captivating scenes from Greek mythology and the Arthurian cycle. One of his most famous paintings, “The Lady of Shalott” (1888), based on Alfred Tennyson’s poem, portrays the tragic tale of Elaine of Astolat. Waterhouse’s mastery extended to female figures, evident in works like “Circe Offering the Cup to Ulysses” (1891) and “Pandora” (1896). His naturalistic depiction of landscapes, influenced by en plein air painting, enhanced the potency of his art.
