“Jungle Mystery” is a 1932 American pre-Code Universal 12-chapter movie serial directed by Ray Taylor. Based on the novel The Ivory Trail by Talbot Mundy, the film follows various expeditionary parties heading to Zanzibar in search of a legendary cache of ivory and a missing explorer named Jack Morgan. The hero, Kirk Montgomery (played by Tom Tyler), and the heroine, Barbara Morgan (played by Cecilia Parker), are determined to find Barbara’s missing brother. Along the way, they encounter rival hunters, including Boris Shillov and his henchman Comrade Krotsky. The intriguing twist lies in the “jungle mystery” surrounding a half-man, half-ape creature named Zungu. The film’s production utilized extensive stock footage of jungle animals, and despite being believed lost for years, the original nitrate negative was discovered and preserved in 2016. A feature version was also released in 1935, edited down to 75 minutes.
