“Marihuana: Weed with Roots in Hell” is a 1936 exploitation film that provides a dramatic depiction of the perceived dangers of marijuana use during that era. Directed by Dwain Esper and written by his wife, Hildagarde Stadie, the plot revolves around a young girl named Burma. After attending a beach party where she smokes marijuana, Burma becomes pregnant and another girl drowns while skinny dipping in the ocean. In order to support their upcoming family, Burma and her boyfriend turn to drug dealing. Tragically, her boyfriend is killed during a drug shipment, leading Burma to run away from home. She is forced to give her baby up for adoption and descends further into the world of drug trafficking. The climax of “Marihuana: Weed with Roots in Hell” sees Burma devising a plan to kidnap and ransom her sister’s adopted daughter, only to discover that the child is actually her own. This film serves as a historical document, reflecting societal attitudes towards marijuana during the 1930s.
