The Mill Dam at “Sleepy Hollow” is a charming lithograph created by the renowned American lithography firm Currier & Ives. In this mid-nineteenth-century image, a fisherman stands on a footbridge above a small dam near an old mill. The scene holds historical significance for residents of North Tarrytown and the Hudson River Valley. The property depicted was once owned by Frederick Philipse, a Dutch colonial New Yorker, who built a dam across the Pocantico River to create a mill pond for grain grinding. The sale of flour from this mill provided substantial income for the Philipse family. Collectors sought out Currier & Ives prints like this one, which captured places steeped in state history. The firm operated until 1907, producing over 4,000 lithographs in various categories, including marines, natural history, portraits, and foreign views
