Washington D.C. trolley car during the Knickerbocker Storm of 1922. The Knickerbocker storm was a blizzard that struck the upper South and middle Atlantic United States on January 27-28, 1922. Its name is derived from the tragic collapse of the Knickerbocker Theatre in Washington, D.C. Around 9 p.m. on January 28, the theater’s roof gave way under the weight of accumulated snow, resulting in 98 fatalities and 133 injuries. The storm’s impact extended across approximately 22,400 square miles, blanketing the region with over 20 inches of snow-more than one-fifth of the area receiving at least 4 inches. In Washington, D.C., the measured snow depth reached 28 inches, making it the largest snowstorm in the city’s history up to that point. Railroad lines between Philadelphia and Washington were buried under at least 36 inches of snow, with drifts reaching an impressive 16 feet.
