Andreas Vesalius was a 16th-century Flemish anatomist and physician whose groundbreaking work revolutionized the study of human anatomy. Born in 1514 in Brussels, he studied medicine at the University of Paris and later earned his degree from the University of Padua, where he became a professor of anatomy. His most famous work, “De humani corporis fabrica” (On the Fabric of the Human Body), published in 1543, challenged centuries of medical teachings based on the writings of the ancient Greek physician Galen. Vesalius dissected human cadavers himself, revealing numerous inaccuracies in Galen’s descriptions, which had been based on animal dissections. His detailed anatomical drawings, created with the help of skilled Renaissance artists, provided a more accurate and visually compelling representation of the human body. Despite facing resistance from traditionalists, his work laid the foundation for modern anatomy and medical education. Vesalius later served as a physician to Emperor Charles V and his successor, Philip II of Spain. In 1564, during a pilgrimage to Jerusalem, he was shipwrecked on the island of Zakynthos, where he died at the age of 50. His legacy endures as one of the most significant figures in medical history, transforming the understanding of human physiology.
