The Home First Number and Music Book forms the second part of the “Coloured Picture Every Day Book” series issued by Dean & Son from their Threadneedle Street premises in London during the mid-nineteenth century. Conceived as an engaging instructional tool for young learners, the volume gathers together three short works of amusement and instruction: “The Child’s First Music Book, or The Gamut and Time-table in Verse”, “Jacko’s Merry Method of Learning the Pence Table”, and “Amusing Multiplication”. These pieces approach the rudiments of music, counting, and multiplication through playful rhymes and simple, memorable verse designed to make early lessons less daunting and more entertaining. The book is distinguished by its “thirty-five hand-coloured illustrations”, which serve both to delight and to reinforce the didactic content. The pictures echo the lively, almost theatrical style that was characteristic of Dean’s toy books of the period. Like many Dean & Son productions, however, the plates carry no artist’s signature, and the illustrator’s identity remains unknown. This anonymity was common practice at the firm, which often emphasized the novelty and abundance of its coloured images in advertisements without crediting the draughtsmen responsible. Taken as a whole, the volume exemplifies mid-Victorian efforts to combine entertainment with elementary instruction.
