In 1767, James Hargreaves invented the first spinning jenny, with which the spinster could spin ten separate threads at once. He was however driven from Blackburn, his native town, by his neighbors, who smashed up his machine believing it would drive them out of employment.
Richard Arkwright employed John Kay to produce a new spinning machine that Kay had worked on with (or possibly stolen from) another inventor called Thomas Highs. With the help of other local craftsmen the team produced the spinning frame, which produced a stronger thread than the spinning jenny produced by James Hargreaves. In 1769 Sir Richard Arkwright, patented his cotton spinning frame and established factories at Cromford. H was the first to employ machinery on a large scale for textile manufacturers.
