Squille De Lesson ; Erychte Narwal ; Erychte De Latreille ; Alime Tétracanthure. Voyage De La Coquille, Crustacés, Pl. n°4.
This plate is taken from the natural history and botanical section (Voyage De La Coquille, Crustacés, Pl. n°4.) of the “Voyage around the world executed by order of the king, on His Majesty’s corvette La Coquille, during the years 1822, 1823, 1824, and 1825, under the ministry and in accordance with the instructions of His Excellency the Marquis de Clermont-Tonnerre, and published under the auspices of His Excellency Mgr le Cte de Chabrol, Minister of the Navy and the Colonies, by L.I. Duperrey,” published in 1826 by Arthus Bertrand, Paris. This significant voyage led Duperrey, accompanied by his second Dumont d’Urville, to South America (Chile, Peru), then to the Tuamotu Islands, the Society Islands (Tahiti, Bora Bora), followed by New Ireland, and finally to New Zealand and Australia from 1822 to 1825. Louis-Isidore Duperrey (1786-1865) was a French naval officer and explorer. Duperrey joined the navy in 1802 and served as a marine hydrologist aboard the Uranie during its voyage around the world (1817-1820) under Louis Claude de Saulces de Freycinet. He later commanded the ship La Coquille on its circumnavigation of the earth (1822-1825), with Jules Dumont d’Urville as his second. During this expedition, La Coquille explored the Pacific, the islands north of Australia (including New Guinea), and parts of South America. Notably, the ship spent time in the Bay of Islands in New Zealand and visited the island of Oualan (now Kosrae) in the Federated States of Micronesia. Duperrey was the first to map the entire Gilbert Islands archipelago (now part of Kiribati). In 1861, he was elected a Foreign Honorary Member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. The Australian eastern three-lined skink (Bassiana duperreyi) was named in his honor. Two plant genera were also named after him: Duperrea and Duperreya from Australia.
