Cover art to a magazine produced in the 1920’s and 1930’s to address the surge of interest in America about the East. The art was mixed but a heavy emphasis was put on Art Deco designs. The artist, Major Felten, also known as Felton, was an American visual artist and illustrator born on March 19, 1904, in Canaan, Connecticut. He became known for his modernist style designs, particularly in charcoal drawings and other media. Felten’s work was prominent during the 1930s to 1950s, and he was celebrated for his posters and book illustrations. Some of his notable contributions include illustrations for the 1931 edition of Baudelaire’s translated poems, “The Flowers of Evil,” and a commercial modernism style illustration for the January 1934 issue of Ladies’ Home Journal. Felten’s art often reflected the Commercial Modernism style, characterized by its clean lines, bold forms, and a focus on modern, everyday subjects. His work left a lasting impact on the visual arts scene of his time, and he continued to influence illustrators and artists long after his passing in 1975.
