Painting of a parade wagon from one of the most spectacular circus parades; the ‘Golden Age Of Chivalry.’ Constructed in 1903 for the Barnum & Bailey Circus, it has paraded in the streets of almost every major city in America. The steam calliope is also known as a steam organ or steam piano. In the age of steam, the steam calliope was particularly employed on riverboats and in circuses. Circus calliopes traditionally came last in parades. Some circus calliopes were self-contained, mounted on a carved, painted and gilded wagon pulled by horses, but the presence of other steam boilers in the circus meant that fuel and expertise to run the boiler were readily available.
