Still Life with Cake is an early 19th-century oil painting by American artist Raphaelle Peale. The artwork, housed in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, features a simple compositional structure typical of Peale’s style. On a ledge before an indistinct background, Peale arranges a blemished apple, raisins, and a “poor man’s pound cake” The latter was usually made from leftover dough to which sugar or nutmeg would be added. Raphaelle Peale, the son of Charles Willson Peale, was known for his tightly grouped still lifes. His essential style may have been influenced by Spanish still lifes he studied in Mexico and the works of Juan Sanchez Cotan. Tragically, Peale’s life was marked by alcoholism and the effects of arsenic and mercury poisoning from his work as a taxidermist in his father’s museum. His melancholic approach to still life paintings resonates with the delicate beauty captured in Still Life with Cake.
