Jan Christiaan Sepp (1778-1853), a Dutch entomologist, belonged to a family of publishers and artists with a rich legacy. His father, Christiaan Andreas Sepp, established the Sepp publishing company, renowned for its natural history collections of plates between 1768 and 1860. Jan Christiaan Sepp joined the family business, and together they produced remarkable works. Notably, “Surinaamsche vlinders: naar het leven geteekend” (Papillons de Surinam dessinés d’après nature) stands out-a three-volume masterpiece containing approximately 150 entomological illustrations of lepidoptera (butterflies and moths) along with detailed verbal descriptions. Sepp contributed both the texts and illustrations, capturing the intricate beauty of butterflies and insects. His dedication to scientific accuracy and aesthetic appeal left an indelible mark on natural history illustration.
