Thomas Gainsborough RA FRSA (1727-1788) was an English portrait and landscape painter, draughtsman, and printmaker, considered one of the most important British artists of the 18th century.
One of Gainsborough’s best known works, “The Blue Boy” (circa 1770) was long thought to be a portrait of Jonathan Buttall, the son of a wealthy merchant, because of his early ownership of the painting. This has never been proven and the likely sitter is Gainsborough’s nephew, Gainsborough Dupont. “The Blue Boy” is a historical costume study as well as a portrait; the boy is dressed in clothing from the 17th century as an homage to Anthony van Dyck.
