The Birdsall Company, founded in 1860 as H. Birdsall & Son in Penn Yan, NY, initially focused on manufacturing agricultural equipment. Around 1880, they expanded into circular sawmills. In 1881, the company relocated to Auburn, NY, purchasing the old Cayuga Chief Co. works and renaming it the Birdsall Co. Under the leadership of Edgar M. Birdsall, they continued producing sawmills and traction engines. After Edgar Birdsall’s departure in 1887, the company became the New Birdsall Co. and later reorganized as the Birdsall Engine Co. Their legacy lies in their contributions to steam traction engines and their impact on early American industry.
