Will H. Bradley (1868-1962) was an influential American Art Nouveau illustrator, artist, and film director. Known as the “Dean of American Designers,” he left an indelible mark on early 20th-century visual arts. Bradley’s journey began in Boston, Massachusetts, where he apprenticed at a newspaper in Ishpeming, Michigan, at the age of 12. His dedication to freelance graphic design led him to establish the Wayside Press in Massachusetts, where he produced the magazine Bradley, His Book. His elaborate posters and full-page magazine advertisements for ink manufacturer Ault & Wiborg garnered acclaim. Bradley’s artistic style, rooted in Art Nouveau, also drew inspiration from the Arts and Crafts Movement and Japanese block printing. His legacy extended beyond illustration; he worked as an editor, art director, and film producer. Bradley’s films, including Bitter Fruit and Moongold, showcased his versatility. In 1954, he received the AIGA medal, the highest honor for graphic designers. His prolific career spanned nearly a century, leaving an enduring impact on American design and visual storytelling.
