Clare A. Briggs (1875-1930) was an early American comic strip artist who gained prominence in 1904 with his strip A. Piker Clerk. His later comic strips, such as When a Feller Needs a Friend, Ain’t It a Grand and Glorious Feeling?, The Days of Real Sport, and Mr. and Mrs., showcased his talent for capturing small-town Americana. Born in Reedsburg, Wisconsin, Briggs began his newspaper career in Dixon, Illinois, delivering papers while wearing a patriotic cap. His Midwest upbringing provided inspiration for the nostalgic scenes he depicted in his cartoons. While attending the University of Nebraska, he studied drawing and stenography, and his encounter with Lieutenant John J. Pershing steered him toward a career in newspaper art. Briggs worked as an editorial cartoonist during the Spanish-American War and later created A. Piker Clerk, often considered the first daily continuity comic strip. After 17 years in Chicago, he returned to New York, leaving behind a legacy of humor and Americana in his timeless illustrations.
