Sir Henry Raeburn (1756-1823) was a Scottish portrait painter and a significant figure in the world of art during the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Born in Edinburgh, Raeburn became Scotland’s first prominent portrait painter to remain based in the country after the Union. His skillful portrayal of individuals captured their character and essence, earning him recognition and patronage. Raeburn served as the Portrait Painter to King George IV in Scotland. His works include both self-portraits and depictions of notable figures. Among his mature works are portraits of the Rev. Sir Henry Moncrieff Wellwood, Dr. Wardrop of Torbane Hill, Adam Rolland of Gask, Lord Newton, and Dr. Alexander Adam. Perhaps his most famous painting is the small full-length portrait titled “Rev. Robert Walker Skating on Duddingston Loch”, which exudes both realism and charm. Raeburn’s legacy endures as a master of capturing the essence of his subjects through his brushstrokes and keen observation.
