Eugene Field Sr. (September 2, 1850 – November 4, 1895) was an American writer who was best known for his children’s poetry and humorous essays. He was known as the “poet of childhood”.
Eugene Field first started publishing poetry in 1879, when his poem “Christmas Treasures” appeared in “A Little Book of Western Verse.” Over a dozen volumes of poetry followed. Field became well known for his light-hearted poems for children. The most famous of these poems are “Wynken, Blynken, and Nod” (often misspelled as “Winken, Blinken and Nod”) and “The Duel” (which is also known as “The Gingham Dog and the Calico Cat”).
