Frederick William Frohawk (1861-1946) was an English zoological artist and lepidopterist. His artistic legacy lies at the intersection of natural history and illustration. Frohawk’s major contributions centered around British butterflies, and he authored notable works such as the two-volume “Natural History of British Butterflies” (1924) and “The Complete Book of British Butterflies” (1934). His meticulous watercolors and detailed engravings captured the delicate beauty of these winged creatures. In 1927, financial constraints led him to sell his extensive butterfly collection to Lord Rothschild, now part of the Rothschild collection at the Natural History Museum in London. Beyond butterflies, Frohawk illustrated bird books and collaborated with ornithologist A. G. Butler. His passion for the natural world, nurtured by his mother from an early age, left an enduring mark on scientific illustration and our understanding of British fauna.
