Yui: Fording the Yui River (also known as Yui, kachiwatari Yuigawa no zu) is a woodblock print created by Utagawa Hiroshige I during the Japanese Edo period, around 1841-44. It is part of the series The Fifty-three Stations of the Tôkaidô Road (Tôkaidô gojûsan tsugi no uchi), also referred to as the Gyôsho Tôkaidô. The print depicts travelers fording the Yui River (Yuigawa) at the station of Yui. The composition captures the serene beauty of the landscape, with the river flowing gently and travelers navigating the water. Hiroshige’s skillful use of color and perspective evokes a sense of tranquility and contemplation. The print is a testament to Hiroshige’s mastery in capturing the essence of nature and travel along the historic Tôkaidô Road.
