“Christ with a Staff,” also known as “The Apostle James the Less,” is a painting attributed to a follower of Rembrandt. Currently housed in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, this work reflects Rembrandt’s style from the 1660s. The brushwork imitates his unique technique, but some scholars suggest similarities to Arent de Gelder, one of Rembrandt’s later pupils. While the painting captures some of Rembrandt’s surface effects, it falls short of achieving his sense of volume, various textures, and atmospheric depth.
