About the Product

“The Ideal Picture Book of Animals,” published by McLoughlin Brothers in New York around 1902, was a large-format children’s picture book designed to showcase the height of chromolithographic printing at the turn of the century. Bound in decorative pictorial boards with cover designs featuring animals such as a cow or zebra, it contained a series of richly colored, full-page plates depicting both familiar domestic animals and exotic creatures, each accompanied by brief captions aimed at young readers. Printed on one side only, the plates were intended to be enjoyed as stand-alone illustrations as much as part of the whole book, which explains why complete copies are now rare and most surviving examples have been broken for the sale of individual sheets. As part of McLoughlin’s early 20th-century line of natural history and gift books, the volume reflected both the educational ambitions and decorative appeal of children’s publishing at the time, presenting animals in bold, striking colors that were meant to both instruct and delight.
