Charles Becker, along with his brothers Louis and Frederick, played a pivotal role in Baltimore’s tobacco industry during the late 19th century. As German immigrants, they began as tobacco merchants and expanded into cigar production in Baltimore and Martinsburg, West Virginia. Their success grew when they ventured into wholesaling leaf tobacco, operating from what is now the Inner Harbor’s Power Plant Live! area. The Becker Brothers’ influence extended beyond tobacco; they also made a fortune in the wholesale fruit trade, owning a substantial tract in the Shenandoah Valley. Charles, in particular, explored grape cultivation and even harbored dreams of producing sparkling wine. Although the latter didn’t materialize, their legacy remains woven into Baltimore’s historic fabric.
